The dramatic increase in fuel prices in 2008 demonstrated the vulnerability of the Pacific Island countries with their dependency on fossil fuels. With these fuels accounting for more than 30% of the import bill in 6 of the 14 independent Pacific Islands, with the exception of Papua New Guinea, have experienced the catastrophic impact on their budgets.

Lighter Burden, Brighter Future documents renewable energy options adopted in  Cambodia, Fiji, India, Sri Lanka, Vanuatu, Germany and the USA. The programmes,  supported by The World Bank are sustainable solutions and can serve as models and possible sources of Inspiration for other countries facing a similar energy crisis.
